Early Life and EducationJohn Carroll was born in Maryland, the first son of immigrant parents.
He received his early education in France and Belgium, where he pursued theological studies at the University of St. Omer and the University of Liège.
Jesuit Priesthood and Academic Career
In 1753, Carroll joined the Jesuit order.
He was ordained a priest in 1761 and served as a professor at the Jesuit colleges of St. Omer and Liège. His teaching and scholarship earned him a reputation as one of the most learned Catholic intellectuals of his time.
